Reading the chart Up and to the right is better: strong offense and strong defense. Complete — good at both. Shootout — scores but leaks.
Grind it out — defense carries it. Work to do — neither side yet.
Texas A&M Weaker Stronger Dashed lines mark the average benchmark (50).

What a score means

fixed benchmarks, not a curve

Scores are measured against fixed statistical benchmarks, so a 78 means the same thing in Week 1 as it does in Week 12. Nobody is handed a 100 for finishing first. A perfect score would require a shutout with zero yards allowed, so the practical ceiling sits in the mid 90s.

  • Defense: yards allowed per game. 380 allowed scores 50, 225 scores 80, 75 scores 95.
  • Offense: yards per play (60%) and yards per game (40%). 5.5 yards a play scores 50, 7.5 scores 79.
  • Combined: the two sides weighted equally.
Two honest caveats. First, the defensive score still runs on one input. Points allowed, yards per play allowed, third-down stop rate, takeaways and sacks all belong in it, and I couldn't pull those for the full field from a free source this session. Second, nothing here is adjusted for opponent strength, so a big number against a soft Week 1 opponent reads the same as one against a ranked team. Both are fixable once this runs on a real weekly pipeline.
